My fear is that I'm turning into a couch potato.... I've watched some of the 90 Day Fiancė and now I'm watching something called Nightmare Neighbour, something filmed in the UK. I've sorted out that a solicitor is what I would call an attorney or lawyer however, I can't seem to sort out what the term "council" is referring to. Originally, I thought that reference to a "council home" meant that it was government owned or subsidized. After watching several of these episodes, neighbors having problems with neighbors and taking there concerns to the "council", that council means something like what an association would be here to condominiums as well as housing communities built by a single builder. If someone could explain the term council, I would greatly appreciate it.

By the way, you might enjoy this documentary. To me the most interesting story in it is Shelby's story but some of what she says I can't understand because her accent is so strong. And yes, she's speaking English! She sure should have cleaned-up her apartment before the camera and sound crew arrived. It's not that bad like a bomb went off in a pig sty but I can't understand why she didn't get it straightened-up and as nice and neat as possible before filming.

I watch those British council house-themed shows all the time. A girl who lived in one even left behind a t-shirt that read, "Council House Princess" on it.

If you choose to watch it, maybe you can figure out and tell me what that giant pink sneaker shoe is used for which she (Shelby) has sitting in her bedroom/living room. I have two guesses. One is, it was a beanbag chair but all the styrofoam "beans" are missing from it, or, it is a hamper for dirty clothes.

Thank you, but I'm not looking for things to binge watch. I'm not much of a reader and watching television can only work for so long. As far as the things I've watched, I've been entertained but since the NIGHTMARE NEIGHBOUR is a UK production, I'm not familiar with everything they say and as I've said, I've sorted out several of the terms used, I'm still not able to sort out what the term "council" makes reference to.
I binge-watch Hoarders. I'll link you to a good one. The Steven in Olympia, Washington part in this episode is one of the best ones I've ever seen because at the end it's such a lift to see his place so clean and organized. It's corny to say it contains a "feel-good moment" but it does have that. Such a relief to see his horrible pig pen converted into a nice place...looking like a studio apartment is supposed to look like. Only thing left to do that I could see was, he needs to rent a steam cleaner and get rid of that pale stain on the carpet. Other than that, the place turned out looking great. I hope he didn't backslide later and trash it up all over again.
I like to pause the video when they show the "After" so I can get a good look.

Thank you. So is a council house a home that is owned and regulated by the local government? Is the council housr something that can be owned by a person or is it month to month and based on a person's income? In one of the episodes, it seemed to me that after living in her council house for a period of one year, a lady received a letter that made her "official" and she felt comfortable enough to move forward with house updates.

Strictly speaking a "council house" is one owned by the council, who then acts pretty much as a straightforward landlord. People on no/low income can apply for help with rent costs (Housing Benefit) but the rent doesn't vary depending on the tenant's income. After a period of years people have the right to buy their Council House (ie. where they have been a tenant and paying rent), but that's quite a controversial policy.

We have broader, what we call, Social Housing. That includes Council houses but also includes properties owned by Housing Associations (that tend to be not-for-profits or similar)who again act as a landlord.

That really just leaves owner-occupiers and people renting from private landlords.

Ah, thank you, that makes sense. In this particular program, the people rely so heavily for the council to intervene in matters ranging from neighbors being too loud, balls coming over walls landing in their gardens to concerns over new construction. We cannot do whatever we please here, if I'm too loud I would probably receive visits from the local police and if I continued being a loud neighbor, there's a good chance I would receive a ticket and summons to appear in court. If I want to improve and/or build on my property, I would have to "pull a permit", something normally done by the contractor that is hired to do the job. The permit is something that is purchased from township/city and inspection(s) will be done to ensure that work is meeting code. Strange, if I choose to install a hot water tank, furnace or upgrade my electrical wiring, I can do it and not pull a permit (I don't know if it is legal) but a business has to have a permit.

We have similar levels of bureaucracy and devolved powers, by the sounds of it. For example: a noisy neighbour would probably be referred to the Environmental Health dept of the Council first, then become a police matter.

We have a lot of, what they call, "poverty porn" TV in the UK. It's a small problem, on the very margins of normal behaviour amongst the most deprived members of society, but the right-wing media demonise a lot of people based on a tiny sample.

Of course all of that seems, somehow, a bit trivial when Covid 19 is fucking up everything!!

I Google'd the population of the UK, there's 63 million residents as of 2018, with 56 million living in Great Britain and all in an area half the size of the state of California which has 40 million residents. I'm sure that contributes to the tension and why so many people seem to have multiple CCTV's.

Nightmare Neighbour is not one I've come across, so can't really comment as to whether that falls into the "poverty porn" category. Sounds like it probably isn't, reading back through the thread.

We don't have massive wildernesses, like N America, but there is still plenty of green and pleasant land to go round. The preponderance of surveillance in this nation is troubling to many of us, but is only really an issue in urban spaces. Having said that, if you live a "normal" life (school, work, shopping, social life etc) you WILL be under the eye of "Big Brother".

Sorry about the delay in replying: the shitstorm that is Covid 19 has meant me doing extra volunteering shifts at the Foodbank.

I must say that your country is lovely! Beautiful homes, buildings with filled with history, the land lush and green! It's no wonder why so many people make the choice to visit or call the UK their home!

Something I've noticed from watching this is the gardens are beautiful and those that tend to their gardens take their "job" and gardens very seriously.

Did you listen to or watch the almost 4 minute video? I am not debating that McDonald's is not fine dining. What I find unfathomable is that McDonald's being a big corporation, does not offer paid sick time to their workers. It is sad that some workers make the choice to go to work sick because if they don't, they won't be paid.

It is very possible that sick workers prepare and serve food to unsuspecting people that have made the choice to eat there whether it be out of desire or necessity. Sorry, I shouldn't have to worry about receiving a side of coronavirus with my Shamrock Shake.

If we go on lockdown conditions you can still go out side you just can’t leave your property well my property consists of 22 acres of woods trees rocks and mountain laurel so if I run low on food I will grab my favorite rifle and take a walk I’m sure muggsy won’t mind eating deer turkey rabbit or squirrel 🐿 or maybe even a black bear 🐻

Yesterday on my way home from work, I stopped at Walmart for mascara. Yep, it was a need for "drugstore" level mascara that prompted me to plan that stop. That place was a fricken Z00 and I should have just drove by.

So after making my selections in the Health & Beauty section, I meander over to the food side. I was truly surprised to see the shopper's baskets overflowing and the offerings on the shelves minimal and with regard to the paper products, ie toilet paper, paper towels and facial tissue, ZIP, NADA, NOTHING.

I called my sister this morning regarding one matter and eventually mention my trip to Walmart. She said she was good on toilet paper however she was low on paper towel. "No worries", I tell her, "order it from Amazon". Sometime later this afternoon, I'm curious and I check Amazon, Amazon is out of stock in bulk quantities of paper products however it is possible to buy single rolls of paper towels at the cost of $24.86 PER ROLL!

In the UK we can go outside to exercise . Go shopping and the like . But we are "advised" . And I stress ADVISED to not get closer than two meters to each other . Not to gather in crowds . Not to go to pubs clubs and theatres . At the moment the government are stopping short of bringing in any kind of curfew or making it an offence as they have not got the man force in the policing to implement it . But they can! and will arrest anyone that has got the virus and has not self isolated themselves .
