Anyone interested in cars other than myself? I'm watching something on Netflix called Rust Valley Restorers, it's like house flipping but for cars.

The business, Rust Bros, is in Tappen, British Columbia, Canada and the owner, 62 year old Mike Hall, has a love for old cars, when cars were cars. If you have a love for cars, I believe you will enjoy this program.

Love them, always have. Will most likely have about 10 to 20 of my all time favorites, when my ship comes in. I just recently acquired #4 favorite car on my list of gotta have. I use to build them and race them before I decided to have numerous children. But now, we're down to 2 left, and the desire is coming back. 😉 Is that the only place to check the program out?

Rust Valley Restorers can be seen on the History Channel as well. I believe that the show first aired December, 2018. I'm only beginning the 4th episode and to see those beautiful cars brought to their full glory.... I was not aware that the Buick Riviera was originally supposed to be a Cadillac, but the decision was made to move it to Buick lineup to attract the young and hip market. Also, the Rust Bros. were talking about a Beaumont. What? I had to Google that vehicle and if I remember correctly, a Beaumont is the Canadian version of a Chevelle, made in Canada for the Canadian market.

So you watch it? Mike Hall, the owner, is like a "kid with a toy(s)" when it comes to cars, it seems hard for him to let one go. As I said, I'm only at episode 4 but in episode 3, he almost had a kitty because he knew he had to sell his beloved Plymouth Satellite to keep his business financially stable. He sold it at a car show/swap meet for 45k.

I haven't seen that but I do enjoy 'Wheeler Dealers' which was originally a UK series but transferred to the US, but wiotht Uk presenters.
I have never restored a car in my life but I love seeing how if you have the tools for the job most things are possible.

Long time hobby of mine but budget constraints and health prevent me from really going full blast on the projects I would like to tackle but I have several old cars I toy with and trust me,when you are recovering from a accident or bad relationship or whatever,when you can tackle a rust bucket and bring it back to something you can drive,it helps remove the stress.
Not much into street rods as I am putting it back close to whate it was when it came out new

Idealy, there was be a Tucker in my shop!.Or at least 1 of those fiberglass kits that were made for a short time after the movie came out. I mean there was only about 48 maby,49 of them so if you were waiting for your ship to come in,it would have to be more than a cabin cruiser to get 1~!

Doesn't surprise me at all. Just put some potholes in the lane to knock the car over a bit suddenly,or maby a emergency road repair in the path of that car and we will get a good glimpse of the wonders of modern technology as it plows into workers and equipment and kills and maimes.
And who would be to blame for a accident?If there was no video of the driver like we see here to show what really happened? The driver could say,oops,I didn't know.

Teslas have radars. And despite that the technology is rather yet in it's dipers, it already works. Here is a video of a Tesla warning the driver about accident on a road ahead and starting to break before driver's reaction.

It is not yet well enough to navigate through multiple objects, but I'm sure, Tesla won't just plow into unexpected road construction site or a group of people. Unless they sudenly run across the road, indeed, in which case human driver would not do much either.

So to your knowledge, when a Tesla is in autopilot is it capable of doing anything other than straight highway driving? I mean if you program it to go to gtandma's house, is it smart enough to navigate right and left turns and entering and exiting the expressway? I suspect it is if it capable of finding a parking spot and parallel parking the car within the space.

Absolutely just tell the computer where you want to go and it will take you there. You can also tell your car via your cell phone, to pick you up at the front of the store from its parking space. I have seen it done amazing. the car is hooked up to your phone and you can monitor it thru that device.

I did not watch Tesla's progress that close. From what I know about current AI developments it should be able to navigate roads that are in it's memory, take turns, change lanes, stop at traffic lights and avoid other cars and pedestrians during that as well as unexpected obstacles and potholes. But the question is at what speed and how smooth. AI can't yet go as fast and as smooth as human driver can in a complicated environment. For example, it sometimes can mistake cars parked on a side of the road for moving cars and drop the speed too much. Because it's cognition is not perfect it takes extra precautions and therefore it's slower and clumsier.

Also, do not expect it to make decisions or navigate "unfamiliar" environment. If the route was not put in its memory in some way - it's heplpess. If an unexpected obstacle blocks the road, it will just stop and wait for human driver to react.

Very interesting! So if I understand what you have said, the car would have to be "trained", perhaps by taking it on a practice ride from point A to point B to have a route in its memory, is that a correct understanding? Obviously, there are too many variables that could cause confusion for the computer.

They usually already have road maps uploaded into memory. Should be trainable too the way you described, but I'm not sure if the creators are willing to trust it to the user. Probably there is an option to record a desired route over already existing map, but unlikely that they allow you to teach the car to go to areas where there are no already mapped roads.

They are however light years ahead of Goggle. I remember a women getting run over by a Goggle vehicle here in Tempe AZ when she crossed in front of the car at night. Sadly the driver wasn't paying attention and didn't break until it was all over. For those that don't know Goggle is trying to perfect their self driving car and is testing it , or was, here in AZ.

Teslas have at least 20 cameras around the car. There definitely would be a record. As to the pothole they are programed to miss those kind of obstacles . I would think that was among the many things they are working on. I suppose it would be better to not have these cars and still have some fool hit that pothole and kill or maim people.

Although this is a news clip from 8 months ago, my guess is the automobile still has the same issue.

The only way police were able to get the car to stop was to send a police car directly in front of the Tesla and decrease speed so that the Tesla would do likewise. What is surprising is that I believe this clip has an owner stating that the Tesla also negotiates lane changes. So if that's true, when the cops jumped in front and began to slow down, why didn't the Tesla just change lanes and pass the cop car?

Not really , the car is auto drive but they require that you have a hand on the wheel at all times. There is an automatous car close to production but it isn't quite ready yet. I could be wrong as youtube doesn't have many time stamps. Elon Musk plans on leasing cars to people and when the lease is over, take the car back and sell it as a self driving taxi as soon as the automatous part is approved for use on our highways and byways. He has a huge advantage over other EV manufacturers, because he is able to access all the million or more cars and their millions of miles driven, data to perfect his automatous car programs. Other car companies don't have that much real world hard data to draw from. By the way his company SPACEX will be the first on the moon and it wont be 50 years before he goes back and wont cost trillions of dollars like the USA spent in the recent past. Sorry this is just of great interest to me.

I think at some point all cars will be able to drive on their own and manual driving will be banned because of higher risks comparing to autopilots. But it's not likely to happen during your or my lifetimes.

I am all for new tech,but maby more hp or better paint or better whatever.But as far as operating the car-machine goes,I want to do that myself. Passive warning deviced like lane wandering or overspeed,to much alchol on your breath no drive, hey not a bad thing.But when you trust electronics to do the driving,it is a recipe for disaster.Just as that Tesla owner that got beheaded when his car mistook a white semi trailer for the sky and took the roof of the car off along with the "drivers" head.
Wound up in a feild miles down the road.
And if Tesla car stops to await the reaction of the "driver",where is it stopping? Middle of the road? Um,that aint gonna be good!

This technology only appeared several years ago, what do you expect? If it develops, however, eventually it will be driving better than humans. The reason for that is simple - humans need time to learn and they learn only from their own experience while robots can share their "experience" - all data from all the situations from millions cars can be collected and analysed and once it's implemented into algorithm it can be upldated all at once in all cars. It's like copying incstincts of the best drivers into everyone else. Humans can't share knowledge that efficiently, robots can. But as I already stated, it's not likely you or I will live long enough to see it.

Not in the Uk. I am pretty sure that the human driver has to be alert and 'at the wheel' so that should the need arise he can immediately take control. No snoozing allowed yet.

My guess is that there is "no snoozing" allowed here while behind the wheel of a self driving car that is engaged in autopilot. It happens intentionally or unintentionally.

A new study by German think tank ifo is putting a damper on the eco-friendliness of electric vehicles (EVs). The research is revealing that these cars may produce significant CO2 emissions both in their battery production and their charging.

RELATED: DIESEL CARS ARE CLEANER THAN SOME EVS, NEW STUDY SUGGESTS

Higher CO2 emissions than diesel cars
"Considering Germany’s current energy mix and the amount of energy used in battery production, the CO2 emissions of battery-electric vehicles are, in the best case, slightly higher than those of a diesel engine, and are otherwise much higher," says the think tank's release.

The study, for instance, estimates that driving a Tesla Model 3 in Germany is responsible for 156 to 181 grams of CO2 per kilometer. That is more than a diesel-powered Mercedes C220d which produces just 141 grams per kilometer.

The study is also highly critical of EU legislation around electric vehicles. For starters, argue the authors, the cars should not be considered as “zero” CO2 emissions vehicles.

There are a few advantages to self driving cars,like it would give the elderly a way to get around.It would help reduce drunk driving accidents.
But those issues could be taken care of with simpler,cheaper tech that is more reliable.Like take the drunk home or take the old person where they need to go.

This battery thing has been a problem since the Honda and Prius cars came out years ago.Last I heard there are several salt mines that batteries are being stored in until they can figure out what to do with them.
Another issue,lithium that is used in alot of the batteries is in shorter suplly than most want to believe.China is being smart and stockpiling alot of it for their own use.
So the folks,mostly liberals,that want electric cars,are not realizing until it will be to late,that instead of having BIG OIL looming over them, they will have BIG LITHIUM. Just moving the problem.
Sadly back in the early days of electric cars,yes even before the 70's, the wieght of a lead acid battery caused issues with range.But at least with lead acid batterys,most all of the thing is recycleable.

I suppose you could but it wouldn't be advisable at this time. the car does have auto pilot but you are required to pay attention to the road. I do see a time when that will be possible, sooner then you may imagine. There will be a fleet of self driving taxis that wont have operators. I would guess that the taxi industry wont be happy about that, but the horse people weren't happy about the car either, and look where we are today.

I had a "news article" on my phone about a Florida man performing a botched castration procedure on a man that he met on a fetish site on the dark web. WOW! I cannot find an actual television news report that confirmed this, but what the hell, this sounds whacky enough to be real.

So this 74 year old man, who is not a doctor (and looks crazy as hell), whose experience with castration is from his childhood while living on a farm meets a man on the dark web. Yeah, can you believe that the other guy is interested in being castrated and is okay with the 74 year old man's surgical credentials. The "patient" arrives at the 74 year old man's home to undergo the procedure and there is a room in the home set up like a surgical center that is stocked with painkillers and a camera to record the procedure. Cool! Kinda like going to an amusement park and riding the roller coaster and your picture being taken to capture that terrified look on your face when you are on your way down..... Alrighty!

Apparently the surgery does not go off without a hitch and the 74 year old "doctor" calls the local police. The police arrive and find the patient laying on a bed with a blood soaked towel covering his groin. OUCH! My guess is that the 74 year old wannabe doctor did not watch any castration tutorials on YouTube. I found this one and it looks quick, fun and easy!

I helped castrate many cows in the past. I don't know why but it didn't affect me then. They didn't seem to mind that but when we branded them they just about destroyed the squeeze shoot we had them in. I know inhumane but it had to be done and they all went on to live a healthy short life.

I believe that you think it is good but it does not sound good to me. In my head, cheese works well with lunch meats and burgers, not peanut butter and Cheese Whiz NEVER works. I believe that my mother did something with Cheese Whiz and celery about 100 years ago and I didn't like it then.
