The "Western" has pretty much died out these days, at one time there were plenty of films at the cinema and t.v.series and they all had magnificent music themes too. Last night (20.8.22), the 1958 film "The Big Country" starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives was shown with my number 1 favourite film music of ALL time, composed by Jerome Moross, a magnificent sweep of music which really conjures up the wide open spaces of 19th Century America. The similarly titled 1960s t.v. series "The Big Valley" starring Barbara Stanwyck, Lee Majors and Linda Evans also had a great theme tune by George Duning and who can forget Elmer Bernstein's awesome theme to the original 1960 version of "The Magnificent Seven"? TCM Movies is currently showing all the old late 1950s/early 1960s series "Sugarfoot" starring the very sexy Will Hutchins who is still alive, now aged 92. What are your favourite "westerns" and your favourite "westerns" music too?

How about Western musicals? Top of the list must be "Annie Get Your Gun" with all those great Irving Berlin songs and which gave the world the immortal "There's No Business Like Show Business". The one and only Ethel Merman played the lead on Broadway but by the time the film was made in 1950, she was slightly too old and was going to be replaced by Judy Garland who filmed some scenes but was then sacked for her unreliability, which wasn't entirely her fault and so she too was replaced by Betty Hutton.

Also the 1969 film version of Lerner and Loewe's "Paint Your Wagon" from which Lee Marvin had a number 1 hit with "Wand'ring Star" although my personal favourite is Harve Presnell singing "They Call The Wind Mariah". (I call it a bloody nuisance.) This film also featured Clint Eastwood's one and only singing role when he warbled "I Talk To the Trees".

What about Rodgers and Hammerstein's OAKLAHOMA!?
By routemaster [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 12:05 other posts
Of course! Shame on me for omitting this. Shirley Jones, who played Laurie in the 1955 film version, gave a concert in London in 2010 which I went to and she met the audience afterwards and signed autographs and chatted and was utterly charming and down to earth. It was a pleasure to meet her. Let's not forget, too, that as well as a beautiful singing voice, she blossomed into a substantial actress and in 1960 did a complete about turn from the sweet young things she had hitherto played by winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as a prostitute in the film "Elmer Gantry" for which Burt Lancaster also received a Best Actor Oscar too.

Let's not forget Shirley Jones starred in two other classic musicals, "Carousel" and "The Music Man."

Shirley was gorgeous in those too and, of course, we all remember her in the 1970s t.v. series "The Partridge Family" where she played mum to her real-life stepson the late David Cassidy.

Weill, "Oklahoma" really isn't a western in the traditional sense. Still a great musical.
By JustWill [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 14:33 other posts
If it has cowboys in it, it's a "western".
By bella! [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 14:19 other posts
Oh, that's tops in my book, in fact I am convinced that when I sing it FULL VOICE, I hit each note, PERFECTLY! And when I sing this song it is accompanied by hand gesture/movement! Yep, the hawk making lazy circles in the sky.....you can almost imagine you're there!

And when I get to this part;

And when we say;
Ee-ee-ow! A-yip-i-o-ee-ay!
We're only sayin',
You're doin' fine, Oklahoma!
Oklahoma, O.K.!

I guarantee that I can make the short hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up!
By JustWill [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 14:41 other posts
It was the first musical that Rodgers and Hammerstein did together! (The Sound of Music is one of my favorites. Julie Andrews' voice is amazing!)

Also, I am pretty sure that the whole 'making the hair on the back of your neck stand up' thing is not what R&H were aiming for...

My rendition is something you would never expect and I reach decibels that even surprise me!

I like Shirley singing "Many a New Day" and "Out Of My Dreams" in "Oklahoma!" and "If I Loved You" and "What's the Use of Wond'ring" in "Carousel".
--------------------------------------- added after 2 minutes

Also Shirley's gorgeous version of "'til There Was You" in "The Music Man".

How about "Calamity Jane" starring Doris Day from 1953?
By routemaster [Ignore] 27,Aug,22 06:56 other posts
Of course! Whip Crack-away!!! One of the greatest stars who ever lived, a fine actress and singer and my number 1 fave of ALL time. Gave a great dramatic performance as Ruth Etting opposite James Cagney in 1955's "Love Me Or Leave Me", both should have got Oscars, they were ROBBED. My favourite song of Doris's is "Move Over, Darling" which got into the British Top 10 in 1964, despite the BBC banning it for what they called "its suggestive lyrics". What nincompoops! Doris Day BANNED? OUTRAGEOUS!

Milton Berle had a prodigious pecker. The only western I could find that he appeared in, was in an episode of “Rawhide”

A classic 👍👍

Fine movie. It was a remake of Kurosawa's Japanese classic "The Seven Samurai" which in turn was Kurosawa's tribute to the influence of John Ford.

Alan Hale of TV’s “Gilligan’s Island” had a monstrous trouser snake.
--------------------------------------- added after 2 hours

He was in the western with Clint Eastwood called “Hang ‘em High”

Alan Hale played the eponymous hero in "Casey Jones", a 1958 series that was shown in the UK during what, in those days, was called "children's hour". I can still remember the theme song: Casey Jones, steaming and a-rolling, Casey Jones, you never have to guess. When you hear the hooting of the whistle its Casey at the throttle of the Canonball Express. !!!!!

Alan Hale Jr. was the son of Alan Hale who frequently co-starred with Errol Flynn in westerns and famously as Friar Tuck in "The Adventures of Robin Hood."

Western music: can only be Ennio Morricone, who wrote much of the music for Sergio Leone´s “Spaghetti Westerns” also starring a newcomer called Clint Eastwood,

Westerns: old school: would probably be “Shane” from 1953. Modern: hard choice between “Unforgiven” or “Open Range”, both great westerns with hard gritty backgrounds and marvellous camera work. Just my two cents worth
By buchanan [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 13:09 other posts
"Shane" is a classic for sure. How about "High Noon" and "Once Upon a Time in the West"?

Thanks for these, especially for me Frankie Laine singing "Champion the Wonder Horse". Barry Curtis, the boy in the 1955 series which was actually titled "The Adventures of Champion" didn't pursue an acting career after that and left the entertainment industry at the age of 17, gained a bachelor's degree in pyschology and passed away at the age of 75 in 2019.

'For a few dollars more' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.
Whenever I see either one of them on TV, I just keep watching.
Also for the great music from Ennio Morricone.

Hats off to you, routemaster, for posting such a brilliant thread! Look at the various posters and their offerings with opinions! And as opinions go, it just proves that a well thought out thread, in this case about Westerns, sparks a good deal of positive attention! And did you notice, there was no hostility or name calling! Bravo!

By routemaster [Ignore] 26,Aug,22 08:03 other posts
Thank you SO MUCH, bella, for your kind words, I never expected to get such a big response and I did notice there was no hostility. Its great that, as adults who love sex and porn, even on such a site as this we do have lives away from all that and can still find things to discuss between us that are far removed from the main purpose of this site. Thanks to everyone!:x :x :x

"Bonanza" was a great theme tune too but the idea of three grown adult men all going to their "pa" with their problems and before they made any decisions was a bit yukky.
By buchanan [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 10:55 other posts
Bonanza was more of a light "western" not being as serious and rugged as westerns of the same era. Hoss was little more than a big clown.
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:37 other posts
He was that. I always found Ben too saintly and Little Joe too sanctimonious.
By buchanan [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 10:43 other posts
Adam (Pernell Roberts) was the most serious brother and Roberts chose to leave the series early as he grew tired of it. Maybe was frustrated being serious and dealing with the more comedic Hoss and Little Joe.

Little Joe’s crotch bulge was on display every show

I can’t recall the name of the movie now but, Johnny Mack Brown showed an impressive trouser snake. No wonder gals were attracted to him.

"The Outlaw Josey Wales" has always been one of my favorites, and probably Clint Eastwood's best film in my opinion.

A good one they would never make today as it had one of Clint's highest body counts! Too many blazing guns for today.
