The "Western" has pretty much died out these days, at one time there were plenty of films at the cinema and t.v.series and they all had magnificent music themes too. Last night (20.8.22), the 1958 film "The Big Country" starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives was shown with my number 1 favourite film music of ALL time, composed by Jerome Moross, a magnificent sweep of music which really conjures up the wide open spaces of 19th Century America. The similarly titled 1960s t.v. series "The Big Valley" starring Barbara Stanwyck, Lee Majors and Linda Evans also had a great theme tune by George Duning and who can forget Elmer Bernstein's awesome theme to the original 1960 version of "The Magnificent Seven"? TCM Movies is currently showing all the old late 1950s/early 1960s series "Sugarfoot" starring the very sexy Will Hutchins who is still alive, now aged 92. What are your favourite "westerns" and your favourite "westerns" music too?

You all need to check out an awesome HBO series called "Deadwood"
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:26 other posts
Not seen that one neither
By buchanan [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 10:47 other posts
"Deadwood" was an HBO series in the mid-2000s. A muddy dirty more realistic western with a strong cast. Worth checking out.

"Deadwood" was a FANTASTIC series!
Unfortunately, it was cancelled before they could finish the story and the wrap-up movie that was done several years later was a big disappointment...
By tb1 [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 13:17 other posts
I agree. Luv’d the tv series, the movie was a fucking disappointment ☹️☹️

Timothy Oliphant (spelled wrong) was in Justified, that was also terrific
By JustWill [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 15:21 other posts
JUSTIFIED was, indeed, an awesome show. It is on my list of all-time favorites.
By buchanan [Ignore] 24,Aug,22 16:03 other posts
I read that "Justified" is being revived and coming back.

Amazon Prime Video has DEADWOOD however it's only available to "buy". I'm not paying $23.00 per season to watch anything!

Hubby here. One of the best series ever is "The guns of Will Sonnett". Pretty old series, but anyone who enjoys a good western needs to watch this. Good gun slinging, and realy excellent story.
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:26 other posts
That may be old, as you say, but its a new one on me, I shall check it out.

"The Guns of Will Sonnett" was a late 60s show I watched as a kid. Starred Walter Brennan.

There was another episode of "Sugarfoot" on TCM Movies early this morning. OMG, the young Will Hutchins is GORGEOUS, beautiful come-to-bed eyes and a nice sexy voice.

I also remember "Laramie" with John Smith, Robert Fuller and Spring Byington from the early 1960s. That had nice theme music too.
By buchanan [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 10:41 other posts
I have been watching "Laramie" which is shown on Grit TV.

Loved the Big Valley. But, why was it always Miss Barbara Stanwyck?
By buchanan [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 10:51 other posts
It was a sign of respect because Stanwyck was already a legendary movie star actress and revered within the industry.

Thank you, buchanan, I could not have put that better myself.

I grew up watching the same westerns, gunsmoke, the rifleman, I remember wagon train, what was the one where it showed them breaking his sword, Branded ? So many great old western movies also
By buchanan [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 10:53 other posts
Branded starred Chuck Connors as a court martialed soldier stripped of buttons and epaulettes and his sword is snapped in two.
By t-rex [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 10:57 other posts
That’s it
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:35 other posts
I remember Chuck Connors in "Branded" and "The Rifleman" and he was also the villain in "The Big Country", shown here last Saturday evening. I've still got the glorious music going round in my head.

I love the old TV westerns and consider Gunsmoke the greatest, Then Wagon Train and Rawhide. The Virginian had a sweeping theme.

I have watched 100s of western movies and so many classics to choose form. How about The Searchers and Red River?
By tb1 [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 14:09 other posts
or The Tin Star?
By PITBULL [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 18:24 other posts
Yes, Gunsmoke and the Lone Ranger were my favorite shows. Today I still watch Gunsmoke.
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:31 other posts
The Tin Star was on t.v. here last week, excellent black-and-white Western from 1957 starring Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins.
--------------------------------------- added after 55 seconds

I'm old enough to remember "Gunsmoke" when Dennis Weaver was in it playing the limping "Chester".

"The Virginian" was indeed another one with great theme music

Winchester '73 with James Stewart
By buchanan [Ignore] 22,Aug,22 01:12 other posts
That's a great one!
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:30 other posts
That was on t.v. here only last week, James Stewart excellent as always and so was Shelley Winters.

By tb1 [Ignore] 22,Aug,22 04:51 other posts
How about The Lone Ranger. A wonderful tv series and The William Tell overture.
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:29 other posts
Yes, both are great. I know a joke about that too: What's the closest thing to silver? The Lone Ranger's bum!!!

By alanhuk [Ignore] 22,Aug,22 07:18 other posts
Tv as a kid was Wagon Train...!
By routemaster [Ignore] 23,Aug,22 03:27 other posts
This is one I do remember!

By Robben [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 01:39 other posts
I like the Spaghetti Western films by Sergio Leone with the legendary music composed by Ennio Morricone. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is number one for me.
By routemaster [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 03:06 other posts
Thanks Robben, a great choice of music too, played by the Hugo Montenegro Orchestra and a great film from 1968, too
By buchanan [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 11:03 other posts
You can't beat Clint as The Man With No Name.

By tb1 [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 01:02 other posts
Kudos buddy, you nailed it here.

The tv series Rawhide was terrific and every once in a while ‘Wishbone’ or ‘Mushy’ would sport a tight jeans crotch bulge
By routemaster [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 03:09 other posts
Thanks tb, "Rawhide" was great too with the lyrics sung by Frankie Laine who also sang the lyrics to "Champion the Wonder Horse".
By buchanan [Ignore] 21,Aug,22 10:57 other posts
I consider Rawhide the greatest western TV series theme. Don't forget the Ballad of Palladin from Have Gun Will Travel.
