What else would democracy be? The only alternative is "direct democracy", where people are voting on direct initiatives on specific subjects, like a higher minimum wage or restrictions on abortion, or whatever the people got on the ballot with signatures from registered voters.
What makes you say that neither of the presidential candidates are truly interested in making America better? How would you know if they were? What would you expect to hear them say? What changes do you want them promise?

It's up to you to understand the problems in your country and to imagine solutions to fix those problems. However, you need to be very careful of them putting simplistic ideas of the problems and simplistic solutions in your head. They are pointing at scapegoats for the problems, to distract you from the actual problems. This is a strategy as old as human society. It always caused despair and destruction and it never solved anything.

Take a look at that list, please. Observe that in almost all those different government systems there are countries that are varying between very authoritarian and very democratic. Almost every system allows to be governed by either a brutal dictator or a representative of the people, voted in by a well functioning democracy.
There are federal republics with hardly any democracy and there are federal republics with a better functioning democracy. That the US is a republic is not the problem with your democracy. The problem is that you, the voters, have legalized corruption. American voters voted for politicians who passed laws saying "money=speech". That allows the wealthy and corporations to bribe your politicians. It makes your politicians not work for YOU, but for THEIR DONORS. The politicians are NOT pushing your agenda, they are NOT pushing their agenda, they are pushing the agenda of THEIR DONORS. There are only a few politicians who support changing that system. Trump is not interested in changing that system. He is openly asking the wealthy for money and promising to do what they want in return. He literally said that he is not against electric cars anymore, because Elon Musk gave him money. Do you want a president who does what Elon Musk wants or do you want one who listens to YOU?
