As far as Area Codes go, it's simply a three digit number that makes it numerically possible to keep telephone numbers at 7-digits no matter how large the population in an "area" grows.
Having traveled extensively around the globe for business and in the military I have to say that Americans do have a bias for borders which is largely caused by living inn a country that has very few. With few exceptions, there aren't any other countries where you can drive for three days and still not have crossed a national border. Try that in Europe and you'll have crossed countries nearing double digits. So, we're geographically biased against changes due to national borders. By the way, I typically write my phone number as "01.area code.prefix.number". It makes it usable by anyone around the world. "Notice the dots and no commas".
My page tells you where I live so an area code can't help that much. I don't give out my telephone number here because I don't want to be contacted by phone. I like to have semi-private messages wit my friends here. So far...that hasn't lead to giving my phone number to anyone or getting theirs.
If you want to discloses your Area Code then go for it and I'll simply ignore it. As for me, I'm not ready for that.

I guess Canada, Russia, China, India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Australia aren't well known enough by our 'expert' here?
