She was a big part in what made Star Trek an important show in TV history.
We have been watching the 55 Years Of Star Trek, a multi-episode documentary series and were surprised about how much it was plagued with budget problems and writer feuds. It is amazing how the series survived and created a whole sub culture. However, it was all due to the fans. In a time when people desired progressive values, Star Trek delivered.
Nichelle Nichols helped break some barriers. That's why she will be remembered.
