Successive UK governments have made annoyed sounds about various aspects of the web and suggested that it should be adapted and reduced to what they consider is suitable for the masses to look at. 'Reasons' have included terrorism, peadophilia, public safety, loss of liscensing revenue, the combat of "piracy", crime, both organised and casual, anti-social behaviour, drug abuse and religion,..or rather NOT upsetting the non-christians etc etc.
The current agitation is a government notification that it "needs" to control what young people can have access to, and that very much precludes anything pornagraphic. They know that there will be an outrage if they try to ban
it completely so the current idea is that you will have to 'opt in' to get it on your screen there bye marking yourself out as a sexual deviant of no worthwhile character.
.......Of course there's no evidence of a massive problem with young people and pornography,...but, Hey!!.....think how good a ban will look on the fronts of all the newspapers etc!!
UK govenment authorities already record the sites that every one of us looks at,...yes, including this one, with records kept for one year. Once they get a toehold on a tiny part of the web, more amd more bans and controls will certainly follow until your screen can only show what the government wants you to see.......
Fortunately, it seems that this is more or less impractical to do in actual practice,....or more likely, too expensive for them.
Sadly, if they DO find a way to implement this it will only be the start,...they will soon move on to controlling "pirate" music and films and then, pretty soon, we will only be able to look at what the government wants us to look at........
