I gotta agree with you on Pantera...there's A LOT of great thrash bands out there but those dudes tipped the scales when they hit the scene! I remember when CFH came out; all of us guitar players were doing everything and anything to get Dimes sound! That heavily compressed, balls of steel bottom end sound he had going on is fucking legendary!! I remember Phil saying "we are the undisputed kings of heavy metal"...I have to whole heartedly agree!! Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now
It's a pity you didn't name the best Australian band and came up with just mediocre ones. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds easily beats those three you mentioned :p
Then you don't know Nick Cave. Im not talking about the slow songs that are easily played in elevators, Im talking about his raw older work or the freaky murder ballads. But hey everyone his/her own. I can't really stand AC/DC.
I can't name just one, it depends on any number of things. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Beatles, Hendrix, Doors, Led Zep, ELP, Police, Cure, Pearl Jam, Nervana and so many more.
I'd agree with Led Zeppelin being the best, greatest, ever. They were described in a documentary once as the heaviest folk band the guy had ever heard.
They are in the news today for stealing Stairway to Heaven:
'In a decision on Friday, US District Judge Gary Klausner in Los Angeles said the song and the 1967 instrumental Taurus by the band Spirit were similar enough to let a jury decide whether Plant and Page were liable for copyright infringement.
A trial is scheduled for May 10.'
RIP Keith Emerson of ELP fame, he topped himself recently. Right hand trouble so he couldn't play as he could.

Different types of metal. Thrash is my fave.
How 'bout Mother Thumb and her four daughters.
Or Dick Head and the Four Skins.

Well, I tried to fool the censor but it didn't work. That should be s-I-s-t-e-r-s.
