I have a friend on SYD whose (no)name will remain anonymous. It seems no matter what the topic is, somehow his mind -drifter-s and his comment will include song lyrics. If I were playing Rock-n-Roll Jeopardy at a party, I would want him on my team.

Here's my thought; do you have a favorite tune, it might be because of a guitar riff or maybe it's the lyrics. Do you think you know some of the words, great! Please post some of the words then let us guess if we know the title.

I been known to fight the good fight
I been known to walk alone
I been known to stay out all night
Drinkin' Wine and gettin' stoned

I feel like You're not ever gonna let me love you
I feel like I'm gonna be left here on my own
I feel like I'm not ever gonna rise above you
I feel like we will always walk alone

just something i like much at the moment

What if the song has a melody, not necessary lyrics, that is amazing and filled with emotions. Would that count?
If you know to what music genre I am referring then speak up.

If you're speaking of classical music,
By #170523 15,Jan,14 19:10
You bring up an interesting point and it made me think of something,..Do any members enjoy some classical music or opera from time to time? I fall on the classical side.
By #368717 15,Jan,14 20:28
I was leaning more towards the genre of trance, but I do enjoy some classic from time to time. Also, opera plays of Lord of the Rings symphony is powerful and great.

Film themes and instrumentals too, my favourite film score is Jerome Morross's for "The Big Country", that kind of music and classical are VERY appealing, emotional and can conjure up images too, e.g. whenever I hear the theme to "The Big Country", I just close my eyes and there I am in the wide open spaces of mid-19th Century America. Bloody good film too

To hitman19, I was not familiar with "trance" so I YouTube'd it. I'm not sure what I listened to and here is my question; how does trance differ from techno or house music?
By #415959 24,Jan,14 19:42
You are speaking of the greatest songs ever written.

J.S. Bach died in the year of 1750.

His music is still relevant today...some 264 years later.

Do you think, perhaps that "Katy Perry" will be remembered 264 years from now?
By #170523 25,Jan,14 19:54
Yes, J.S. Bach died in the year 1750,
Yes, His music is still relevant today...some 264 years later.
I was not commenting on the "Katy Perry" part which is where I think your scared face came from.

Who is Katy Perry? The name sounds familiar but I couldn't tell you what she does or what she looks like. Come back the Andrews Sisters, that's what I say

This was a fucking bomb.
For a few seconds, this place was Armageddon.
There was a firefight!

You are the fucking disease.
Another day, Another memory.
But I have fucking failed.
I turned another lie into the work of a saint.

So where is the cure?
Hundreds of souls with the look of horror on their face.
Now I rise from my knees.
I will not live in misery.

You won't take me.
You won't take me.
Now it's me.
Now it's me.

All that's left is a bitter taste of a life that once was so promising.
Rather cut at the wrist than laugh about your mistakes.
Sickness still fills the air.
Another life that you wish you could fake.
Your eyes will cut through me, but it's a risk, that I must fucking take.
I must take.

So where is the cure?
Hundreds of souls with the look of horror on their face.
Now I rise from my knees.
I will not live in misery.

You won't take me.
You will not destroy me.
You cannot destroy me.

And I'll fight you with every ounce of strength I have left.
And I'll seal it with a bullet...and a kiss.
So look at your fucking horror.
Horror.

I want to see your face.
Show me your true face.
I want to see your face.
Show me your true face.

My heart belongs to you, so save me.
My heart belongs to you, so save me, for the sake to give it away.
Still beats, (still beats)
Still beats, (still beats)
Still beats (still beats)
Inside of me.

My heart belongs to you, so save me.
And my heart still beats.
And my heart still beats.
My heart still beats, so save me.
My heart still beats.

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!

My old apartment had a red door, and yes, I painted it black. While singing that song. Lol.

It's definitely my favorite song of theirs.

Can you hear the sitar in there .It became a very popular instrument in the 60s .The beatles .Yard Birds .Jimmy Hendrix and of cause the Stones used it.By the way Brian Jones played the sitar on the Hendix little one tune.

The car broke down and she was like
"Honey, get the flash light"
Still one in the dash right?
Only cause it's late at night
And who knows
What's out there
She was right though
Ain't gonna help with a light though
People dying tonight
Cause yo this maniac is out there
I'm hanging like a possum
Murder tricks, I got some
Spot them
Look come around to the bottom
And slaughter them, out there
His boo was locked up in the car
On the phone and tripping hard
Screaming
Fuck that bitch was scurred
There's a killer out there
Cut that crying shit off I cut
You die
I get off
I'm crawling up on the car
Trying to rip the moon roof lid off, out there

Bitch turned the wipers on
Hazard lights and blew the horn
I smashed with my axe, and pulled her to the lawn, out there
She kicked me hard, to the grill
With one of them Doc Martin heels
Murderas, you know how that feels
Your lip be out there
Time to die
Close my eyes
Swung and felt a thump
I done spilt her head in half like a tree stump, out there

Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what can happen
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, late night killas might be stabbing

Lights on in the house
But it's dark outside
You can even close one eye
Look bitch, I'm out there
Camp fire lit
Boy Scout meeting's they talk of me
Even they leaders got memories of me, I'm out there
Forensic scientists try to figure me out
But I'm too quick for their Sheriff's stupid asses
I'm still out there
Pull up all your road blocks
I'm running them in my socks
Silently taken out all cops, one by one, I'm out there
Leave they bodies In the street
Continue on my murder spree
They can't believe all my heat
When I pull it out there

Break up into the z.oo
Dress up in a monkey suit
Sticking up families for they loot, my brain, is out there
Handy with an ice pick
Pull it out and use it good
In and out your temple
Blo.od is squirting all out there
I'm the urban legend you heard at your college dorm
Jump out and squeeze your vocal cords
When you out there

Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what can happen
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, late night killas might be stabbing

Some where out there a remnance of Bushwick
My mind loads clips at your block
And leave you stuck bitch
A psychopath
With a clasp and a black ski mask
Leave you in body bags
For a news flash
I might be small
But I got big balls
Write my name on the wall
With blo.odstains after the brawl
Evil thoughts run deep in my brain
I'm sick and deranged
So picture the pain
Flowing in my veins
Yeah I'm sick I'm sicker then Hitler
My gat spit streak mothafucking forbidden scriptures
Niggas run from a gun, forgetting they can't
I drag a Mossberg, cause it won't fit in my pants
I run up in your ride, it's parked and it's darkened
Jump out your glove compartment, sparking
The shit that I do, make many faint
Dead saint
Turn your blo.od into candy paint

Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what can happen
Don't you dare go out there, ain't no telling what lies out there
Don't you dare go out there, late night killas might be stabbing

The moment I saw him smile
I knew he was just my style
My only regret is we've never met
Though I think of him all the while.
But he doesn't know I exist
No matter how much I persist
For its plain to see
There's no hope for me
Though I live at fifty-one thirty-five Kensington Avenue
And he lives at fifty-one thirty-three

Chills run up and down my spine
Aladdin's lamp was mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me.
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for
Long ago, was you.

The fire dies on its own
Leaving us to ourselves but not exactly alone
I think that something is out there waiting
Anticipation has grown
The air as black as can be
Can't even see that my hand is in front of me
I'm overhearing a whisper "they won't escape until the blo.od is set free"

So turn back the silence is deafening
Turn back don't let them see you again
They make the rounds at the midnight hour and
On the clock it's just a minute away

So we're hours awake and our only mistake is we ble.ed
And the hunger for the living helps them hunt it with the greatest of ease

Now I'm finding my friends
Hanging from trees, made a bed of a barbed wire fence
I'm on the loose with my neck in the noose but hey...
I enjoy the intense

So turn back the silence is deafening
Turn back don't let them see you again
They make the rounds at the midnight hour and
On the clock it's just a minute away

So we're hours awake and our only mistake is we ble.ed
And the hunger for the living helps them hunt it with the greatest of ease
No experience could ever match the sight of when a person is through
If it's the last thing I will do I'll be the one that will escape from Hellview...
And I will

So turn back the silence is deafening
Turn back don't let them see you again
They make the rounds at the midnight hour and
On the clock it's just a minute away

So we're hours awake and our only mistake is we ble.ed
And the hunger for the living helps them hunt it with the greatest of ease
No experience could ever match the sight of when a person is through
If it's the last thing I will do I'll be the one that will escape from Hellview...

Chances are when said and done
Who'll be the lucky ones who make it all the way?
Though you say I could be your answer
Nothing lasts forever no matter how it feels today

Chances are we'll find a new equation
Chances roll away from me
Chances are all they hope to be

Don't get me wrong I'd never say never
'Cause though love can change the weather
No act of God could pull me away from you

I'm just a realistic man, a bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to love beyond what I can lose when it comes to you
And though I see us through, yeah

Chances are we'll find two destinations
Chances roll away from me
Still chances are more than expectations
The possibilities over me

It's a fight with two to one, lay your money on the sun
Until you crash what have you done?
Is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you breathe, you gotta cry before you sing

Chances, chances
Chances lost are hope's torn up pages
Maybe this time

Chances are we'll be the combination
Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting to be taken, and I can see

Chances are the fascinations
Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we make them and all I need

And this one from 1957:-

Thee I love
More than the meadows so green and still
More than the mulberries on the hill
More than the buds on the May apple tree
I love thee.
Arms have I strong as the oak
For this occasion
Lips have I to kiss you too ...

How about this one:-

Our verandah will command a view
Of meadows green
The view that kind of wants to be seen
And when the kids grow up and leave us
We'll sit and look at that same old view
Just we two
Darby and Joan who used to be Jack and Jill

This is not an offer buddy . But here ya go .

Someday we'll build a home on a hilltop high,
You and I,
Shiny and new a cottage that two can fill.
And we'll be pleased to be called,
"The folks who live on the hill".

Full marks! That was an easy one - and its one of the most beautiful lilting songs ever by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. Peggy Lee's 1957 rendition is lovely but is spoiled a bit as she sings "Baby and Joe" instead of "Darby and Joan", I can't for the life of me think why

You got a fast car, I wanna ticket to anywhere, Maybe we can make a deal, Maybe together we can get somewhere, Any place is better, Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose, Maybe we'll make somethin', Me myself I've got nothin' to prove.

You got a fast car, I got a plan to get us outta here, Been working at a convenience store, Managed to save just a little bit of money We won't have to drive to far, Just 'cross the border and into the city, You and I can both get jobs, And finally see what it means to be livin'.

You see, my old man's got a problem, Lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for workin', I say his body's too young to look like his, My mama went off and left him, Wanted more from life than he could give, I said somebody's got to take care of him, So I quit school and that's what I did.

You got a fast car, Is it fast enough so we can fly away? We gotta make a decision, Leave tonight or live an' die this way.

CHORUS: So I remember when we were drivin', Drivin' in your car, Speeds so fast I felt like I was drunk, City lights lay out before us, And your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder, And I, I had a feelin' that I belonged, And I, I had a feelin' I could be someone, Be someone, be someone.

You got a fast car, We go cruisin' to entertain ourselves, You still ain't got a job, And I work in the market as a checkout girl, I know things will get better, You'll find work and I'll get promoted, And we'll move out of the shelter, Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs.

CHORUS

You got a fast car, I got a job that pays all our bills, You stay out drinkin' late at the bar, See more of your friends than you do of your kids, I'd always hoped for better, Thought maybe together, you and me'd find it, I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere, So take your fast car and keep on drivin'.

CHORUS

You got a fast car, Is it fast so you can fly away? You gotta make a decision, Leave tonight or live and die this way

I've another one here from a great show made into a film in 1958. Won't say what the show is nor the composer/lyricist as that will give it away but its my favourite song from this show by these world-famous musical partners and not only my favourite song from it, it also happens to be my number one favourite musical of ALL time:-

I expect everyone of my crowd to make fun

Of my proud protestations of faith in romance

And they'll say I'm naive as a babe to believe

Any fable I hear from a person in pants.

Fearlessly I'll face them and argue their doubts away

Loudly I'll sing about flowers and spring

Flatly I'll stand on my little flat feet and say

Love is a grand and a beautiful thing

I'm not ashamed to reveal

The world famous feeling I feel .....

That movie has been remastered onto digital and currently being screened again in cinemas.
Also the stage version will be held here at the Festival Theatre later this year.

With words like these how can it not be a hit.

I'm as trite and as gay as a daisy in May,
A clich comin' true!
I'm bromidic and bright
As a moon-happy night
Pourin' light on the dew!.

"South Pacific" of course, I LOVE it, when I first saw that when I was about 10 I decided I was going to marry Mitzi Gaynor - and I'm still waiting. That, of course, before I discovered one or two things about myself! As for Debbie Reynolds, loved her in "Singin' in the Rain", that was before she went all hard and bitter after Elizabeth Taylor nicked her husband. Have you seen Debbie as Liberace's mother in "Behind the Candelabra" with Michael Douglas? She is totally unrecognisable even allowing for the fact she is over 80 now. The make-up people must have worked day and night making her look so different.
By routemaster [Ignore] 11,Jan,14 14:37 other posts
I've had the movie of "South Pacific" on video for years and latterly on DVD. I also have the vinyl LP of the 1958 soundtrack. Of the main characters, Mitzi Gaynor was the only one who actually sang. Rossanno Brazzi was dubbed by Georgio Tozzi and even though Juanita Hall sang the role of Bloody Mary on Broadway in 1949, for some reason her singing voice in the film was dubbed by Muriel Smith who also dubbed for Peggy Wood as the Reverend Mother in the 1965 film version of "The Sound of Music". And talking of which, if you've ever wonder why the recently deceased John Kerr singing as Joe Cable in "South Pacific" sounds remarkably like Christopher Plummer singing as Captain von Trapp in "The Sound of Music", that's because both their singing voices were dubbed by Bill Lee. So there you go, everything you wanted to know about the films of these shows but was afraid to ask!!!!

I don't think the film is being shown in cinemas over here right now but thanks for the info, John, I shall have to keep a look out. I've seen lots of stage productions, both amateur and professional in London's West End, it has some of the greatest and most beautiful songs ever written for one show

I can go back even further than that, one of my great interests is music, so how about this from 1955 by a lovely British female singer who died in 1966 aged only 34?

I put on the light in the middle of the night
And whispered: "dear, let's go."
He grabbed a sock and called the doc,
He told me: "don't be slow".
He got me there with time to spare
And then he sat on pins
'til the doctor shook his hand
And told him: "you've got twins".

Oh my you are great 20 tiny fingers 20 tiny toes.
--------------------------------------- added after 89 minutes

OK my turn.
Does my darling feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
You'd think that he could hear!.

And this one.
Where the pines are so high
That they kiss the sky above
And when I get that lonesome feelin'
And I'm miles away from home
I hear the voice of the mystic mountains
Callin' me back home.

But can you name the singer of "Twenty Tiny Fingers"???

As for yours, I can't get the first one but the second is Doris and "The Black Hills of Dakota" from "Calamity Jane", one of her greatest films. Strange that "miles away from home" and "calling me back home" is not actually a rhyme with the last word being "home" in both cases but in Doris's hands it doesn't seem to matter.

Alma Cogan indeed, she was a fabulous singer, a Londoner like myself, although she was Jewish and I'm not. She will always be associated with the bouncy novelty numbers like "Twenty Tiny Fingers" in the 1950s but by the early 1960s she was maturing into a fully fledged song stylist but sadly it all ended when she died of cancer in 1966 aged only 34. Her 1962 rendition of Noel Coward's greatest song "If Love Were All" is the best version ever, a soaring ballad and I defy anyone not to be moved to tears when they hear it.
