In the States, we have American Idol, The Voice, America's Got Talent and host of other competition based programs....... Please explain what Eurovision is all about. Is Eurovision strictly a vocal competition where each European country has their own representative?
It is contested in the May of every year, the final on a Saturday night, where 26 countries are given the chance to choose an act to sing for them and enter the competition. The big five countries* gain an automatic place in the final, but the other European countries compete in two semi final days during the week to see who else qualifies for the final. All songs last 3 minutes each. Once all the acts have sang, in the same as the semi final, all the countries who have took part (37 each year, 26 who qualified) vote for who they believe should win, they cannot vote for their own country. Voting costs 15p in UK, a very small price compared to other ridiculous prices from the voice, X factor etc. the winner is then announced and performs their winning act again, before announcing that wherever the winning act is from, is where it will be hosted next year. This year it was hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark after Danish girl Emmelie De Forest was victorious last year. It does not have to be hosted in the capital of the winning country. Next year the competition will be held somewhere in Austria after Austrian transgender Conchita won with 'Rise Like As Phoenix. The winning song usually goes on to become number one in the winner's home country, or in some cases, in most European countries (Like Loreen - Euphoria, representing Sweden in 2012).
*The big five consist of UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy and the host nation for the year, this year it was Denmark who automatically qualified. The reason these countries automatically qualify for the Saturday final is because they help fund the competition.
