CAT, I want to thank you for the wonderful time we had last night at the Rickenbacker Causeway watching the submarine races. It sure brought back some HOT, HOT, times, Baby. I know we had to “improvise” some, but, Gorgeous, you made it sooooo good. Love you, darling. Happy Valentine’s Day in advance. Encore, encore, how about at Virginia Beach?

Most EU countries will be spending more than 2% of their yearly expenses on defense in 2024. Finland has always spent more than most, because they share a very long border with Russia. This would make most people a bit nervous.

The EU spent €260 Billion on defense in 2022.
Russia spent $75 Billion on defense in 2022.

I’ve always wondered why they waited so long. I believe that, perhaps , having Russia as a neighbor or near neighbor, would make them cautious.

Well it's just telling russia they have no faith or trust in them, making russia mad, that really doesn't accomplish much but increase the chance of war.

It protects the sovereignty of their nations from an invasion of a known aggressor that is right on their borders. Russia knows that if it starts to fuck around with any NATO countries that article five will come into effect and NATO will protect all NATO countries from any and all aggressors.

Let us all hope it works.
True, we were under the impression that trying to be friends and trade partners with Russia and showing them how nice freedom is, would make them come our way.
That obviously didn't work out well.

Also, if our big brother America spends a trillion per year,
to make the big bad Russians think twice about attacking us,
then it wouldn't be necessary to spend so much on killing tools
and the people who can use them.

Still, we were spending way more than Russia ever did. Or China, or Iran.

The US contently asked Europe to spend more on defense,
but hey, you sell the stuff. Just a sales tactic?

Also, you've told us that you would protect us, so now blame us?

In any case, we have 'seen the light' now (or more; the darkness).
I'm even telling my socialist friends that we shouldn't be naive.

There is a line in the Socialist Party EU election manifesto, that I am debating:
"A European military-industrial complex is the last thing the Netherlands
or Europe needs."
In my opinion, it's unfortunate that we need weapons of war, but it's better to produce them in Europe, instead of buying them from the American military-industrial complex.
I trust the EU a lot more to regulate a military-industrial complex, to serve the defense
of the people, instead of its owners and shareholders. Preferably, I would eliminate
the private ownership of that industry, in line with socialism, but as the lesser evil,
I settle for Europe based private ownership, regulated by EU standards.

Meanwhile, we are fighting Russia, by not buying their fossil fuels anymore.
Our energy prices have gone up by 953%, because of it. That's tough.
And by providing the Ukrainians with lots of weapons. We pay a lot.
We also care for any refugee that cannot endure the fighting anymore.
We know that they are fighting for our freedom too, because if Putin wins
easy enough in Ukraine, his desires are not satisfied yet and his people
could be 'persuaded' into another war, much easier.

The Ukrainians are actually doing much better than anyone ever imagined.
The problem with Russians is that they always do the exhaustion game.
They have an almost unlimited resource of people who are willing to be cannon fodder for the glory of Russia. And if they run out of them, they just send 'volunteers' to the battlefield at gunpoint.

But, Putin made a mistake. He attacked Ukraine first and not NATO.
Now, he cannot catch us off guard anymore. He counted on easily taking Ukraine
and finding a divided indecisive EU, which would keep supplying him with money
for his war chest, by buying his fossil fuels. He found something way different.
The EU cut all business ties with Russia quick and thoroughly. Personally, I hoped
for massive investments into renewable energy, but that is disappointing.
We now buy more oil from the Middle East and lots of LNG from the US.
People in Texas are suffering from the effects.

it is sad that your energy cost have went so high. your neighbors are suffering because your country can't be energy independent.
Your choices for that goal are more logically solar and wind as they don't have to be imported. it is a more viable option for you.
Russia will nuke ukraine before they surrender , and sadly then, energy cost will be the least of your concerns.
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 05,Feb,24 06:04 other posts
Only a tiny percentage of the people actually benefit from that economic growth.
The rest of the people just suffers from the pollution.

My country could be energy independent. There is still 694.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas left below Groningen, but we prioritize the people and nature.
Unfortunately, we do not prioritize the climate enough to become energy independent with wind, solar and other renewable resources, but we spend lots of money to keep buying fossil fuels. That's because the people spending that money are the consumers and not the government. It's stupid short term thinking.

The people in power of Russia, like most people, don't like committing suicide.
They are keeping this up, because it destabilizes the unity of their enemies and because they think their long term strategy will work for them eventually.
However, I'm sure that Putin is regretting his action, because it is proving
much more difficult than he thought. It's only your side, that wants to give him
an easy victory. That's because you don't understand actions and consequences.
We don't have to make Russia surrender, we just need to show them that their long term strategy will never work, up the pressure, and make them beg for peace talks. Then we give them a solution that is just enough for Putin to accept, but makes all
the warmongers in Russia think twice to ever do this again.

Every so often the site becomes like this. There are only a handful of threads that feature politics and current events plus the funny, interesting side of local life. The rest is a repetition of the old cock/pussy diatribe that the less mature members are addicted to.
If we want to keep our threads alive, we have to participate more.

Healthcare was working fine until obama fucked it up.
You went to work for a company that provided health insurance they bought at bulk prices and you were covered.
Now ,most employers, like my dad retired from and my self, no longer can afford to pay for health insurance for new hires after they retire. My fathers and mine are covered for life .Because we went to work for employers that supplied health insurance as a incentive to come to work and retire with 30 years service.

The bullshit pay thing, more bullshit.
My father started out at less than 2 bucks a hour in 1959, when he retired in 89 he was making nearly 18,he was making more than his supervisor. With the stock purchase options he also had, my fathers retirement has went very well.
Young people today, were screwed by obama.
In my case, I was being trained to fill a supervisors position and had I not got hurt ,my pay would have been decent as well.
Health insurance paid for, paid vacation and sick leave, chances to train for promotions for better pay, wasn't bullshit.
Just liberals were to fucking lazy to climb the ladder.they wanted all the rewards for hard work without doing the work.
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 30,Jan,24 08:57 other posts
No it wasn't, medical bankruptcies were very common. People getting denied insurance claims over pre-existing conditions were also common.
Obama made that better. Your healthcare is still the most expensive in the world, while the quality is ranked 23th, but at least less people are denied cancer treatment over a pimple.

Insurance companies were allowed to fuck you over as much as they wanted.
Why is that better than the mild regulation that Obama introduced?
How did Obama restrict companies providing health insurance,
by buying at bulk prices?

Phart, none of this diatribe makes sense. Woody and I have worked a lot longer than you and we know what it was to get insurance. I don’t know of many people that stayed with one employer their whole working life. I’ve been in the labor force since the late 1960’s, and even then, the AVERAGE length an employee stayed at a particular job, was 4 yrs.
It didn’t matter if he was laid off, fired, or changed jobs, the results were the same. Affordable insurance was not available until you had a new job and even then, you were not eligible to join for a minimum of 3 months to one year. Many did not offer insurance were they paid for part of it so you had “cheaper” insurance but many times, still too expensive. That was the reason for ObamaCare.
ObamaCare was not designed for everyone. I remember when it took effect I had good insurance with my employer. I didn’t get ObamaCare and I was not required to change. ObamaCare was designed to stop the practice of employers using the threat of loosing your health insurance to keep you from making waves like trying to get a raise or unionizing.
On the “30 yrs of service”, what was your reward? A gold watch and a Hallmark card signed by your fellow employees? That 30 yrs of service amounted to an employee who had low self esteem and/or was too lazy or scared to better himself.
What did Obama do to screw the young people? Post what he did.
And as far as this:
“Just liberals were to fucking lazy to climb the ladder.they wanted all the rewards for hard work without doing the work.”
You think conservatives are not just as lazy? You are out of touch with the reality of what people are.
By phart [Ignore] 01,Feb,24 15:05 other posts
30 years service,a healthy stock portfolio and 1/4 ly dividends and a retirement check every month for 35 years so far is what that 30 years got my dad.Alot more people would have gotten it over the years had they not swapped jobs like underware. My plan was to work for my employer the full 30, draw that retirement check,my health insurance coverage the rest of my life, and then go drive a truck for a few years to see the country, and further increase my income that social security checks would be based on. Fate had other plans for me sadly.

These people that bounce from job to job have issues that are not the job but themselves most of the time. They don't like taking orders or they don't give their jobs their full attention. all things that decrease productivity and profits , making employers mad of course.
Go to work,do your job and you can have a decent life. Make waves, get swept under.

some of what that woman is upset about is just plain DUMB.
BUT at the same time,I do glean some points. Expensive to stay in a hotel, in other words, they don't have affordable places to stay in the city. Not everyone that travels is a trust fund baby and may be on a budget, perhaps Dutch need to learn about Motel 6?
Also, those canals running thru a CITY???? how in the hell can that be safe? Want to kill someone, just shove em off in the water and drown them.
having to be near that much water all the time would keep me scared to death, not to mention it would mess up my balance issues because seeing moving water makes me wobble.
I am glad I don't live in a big city,no privacy,no peace and quite. Unless you were moving into that apartment in New york that kembo posted last week.
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 30,Jan,24 13:19 other posts
She's correct about that, most hotels in Amsterdam are expensive.
But that's because it's Amsterdam. Housing is ridiculously expensive there.
The smallest apartments there go for 6 grand. That's not much different in capital cities like London. I've stayed on London in a hotel and also paid Ł200 per night.
Still, there are hotels starting at $50 per night or she could have rented an AirBNB apartment.

Amsterdam has lots of canals. They were the transportation system of the time.
Now they are mostly used for fun.

The official count is 165 canals with a length of 75 km.

There's definitely a risk associated with so much water. Lots of drunk people fall in and drown. It doesn't take long for a body floats up and gets found. The canals are full of tour boats with tourists.
Mostly the canals are full of bikes though. We have bike fishermen, fishing up 15,000 bikes per year, to keep the canals open for traffic.

Dutch children get swimming lessons from a young age, because most of our country is below sea level. When the dykes broke in 1953, it killed 1,836. I might put climate change in a different perspective, if you are dependent on dykes for your survival.

The Netherlands is NOT the best country in the world, but if this is her critique I'm satisfied that she couldn't find anything worse. There is enough to piss and moan about. That is a very Dutch thing to do actually.

I've an American friend who's Republican (but not a fascist like phart). I spent 5 days in Arizona recently, at his house. I brought him a gift,a book, that caused him to change his mind about many of the bullshit that Republicans support.

Here's the book. It's excellent! 90% of American readers gave it 4 or 5 stars. The book has been hailed as a tour de force in politics in major reviews.

Here it is.

It's OK To Be Angry About Capitalism presents a vision of what would be possible if the political revolution took place. If we would finally recognize that economic rights are human rights, and work to create a society that provides them. This isn't some utopian fantasy; this is democracy as we should know it. Is it really too much to ask?
By phart [Ignore] 27,Jan,24 15:47 other posts
It is to much to ask of people that work for a living to keep up people that are simply to fucking sorry to work.
You want something ,work for it, you need something, work for it.
IF YOU CAN'T work, then there should be some help for you.

Just to give you a example of why your utopia doesn't work in the real world.our electric bill went up 15% starting this month, our home owners insurance will be going up 25%,possiably more.Car insurance went up last year and will increase again this year.
All these increases are due to several factors but 1 of the main 1's, Large salarys for the workers that provide the service. Another, cost of health coverage has went thru the roof.
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 27,Jan,24 16:51 other posts
Who is telling you this nonsense?
Americans are the hardest working people in the western world.
You are just not working for what you want, but what the rich wants.
Why do things not work in the US, when they are working fine in lots of other countries
in the world. You keep telling me that it's not sustainable, but life is getting worse in the US and better in those countries. When does the real world hit them?

Below are all my costs, from living in a country that is an unsustainable socialist utopia, according to you. Some of my bills went up too, but not with 25% and not even with 15%.

My home insurance is: $47.59 (€43.81)
My car insurance is: $45.78 (€42.14)
Water: $34.12 (€31.41)
Health insurance of my girlfriend $211.84 (€195) (full coverage, standard is €149)
Health insurance of myself $172.46 (€158.75) (extra coverage, standard is €149)
Life insurance: for me: $25.71 (€23.67) + for my girlfriend $9.77 (€8.99)
Union membership: $32.59 (€30)
Mortgage: $492.77 (€453.60)
Regional taxes (house tax+sewer+waste): $163.42 (€150.43)
Energy: $185.41 (€170.67)
Road taxes: $42.37 (€39) per quarter

Every month, the government pays me mortgage interest deduction: $181.42 (€167)

So, which bills do you not pay or pay much less for, in your capitalist utopia?
By leopoldij [Ignore] 27,Jan,24 17:32 other posts
You're not just a fascist, but a stoopid one too. Just like all the idiotic rednecks who let the rich **** them. You and they have been so much brain-fucked that you even say thank you for the shit.
