The '70s

I am a child of the '70s.. Through and through. I graduated high school in 1976, right at the crest of the baby boom. My graduating class had a total size 1448 people. Rather large eh? At the time, my high school was the 2nd largest in the country, second only to Dewitt Clinton HS in NYC... As I often say, there are STILL people waiting in line for their diplomas...

I often hear people talking about what it was like back then, mostly younger people who weren't there who for whatever the reasons have the impression that sex, drugs and rock and roll ran rampant...

Well for the record, it was ALL true.. LOL

The times WHERE different that's for sure. We had just come out of the 60's and EVERYTHING was changing in this country, everything. Experimentation was EVERYWHERE and was the name of the game for ALL things.

Now granted, in my high school there where a NUMBER of cliques and not EVERYBODY was into drugs, sex, alcohol etc. You had your jocks, nerds/geeks, WASPS (yes, we had a pretty big contingent of them where I lived), rednecks, a group we called the RiverRats, blacks and of course the Stoners... or Heads as we called them back then..

There where others as well along with folks who just didn't fit in ANYWHERE. I myself floated between cliques.

I was primarily a head but I was welcomed in with the jocks, WASPS and the geeks as well. I also had a number of RiverRat friends and black gangbanger pals as well (Long story here that I'll spare ya the details of)

Where drugs really that prevalent? In a word YES! LOL

You name a drug and it was available and in abundance. Pot was king of course and back in the day, Jamaican weed ruled this town for quite sometime.. You could get what we used to call a 'Lid' which was roughly a FIVE finger sized bag of pot for about $35.. It was good and it was plentiful, if not a bit seedy..

There was also some Sensimilla running around that was awesome. It mainly came from California although there where in fact some local growers around, even back then. It was expensive. There where also REAL Thai and Buddha Sticks available. These where HIGHLY prized, very expensive and the BEST of the best around...

The Jamacian weed eventually dried up and was replaced by Mexican 'stuff' that was MUCH inferior. This town went through withdrawals! It was a HORRIBLE time. Then we started to get higher quality Mexican strains like Panama Red, Acapulco Gold, Michoacán etc. and of course, the prices started that steady rise upwards...

Quaalude where also king and they where EVERYWHERE. 714 was printed on just about every other T-shirt back then LOL..

Hashish also, Afghan surfboards, Red Lebanese flooded this town.. Cheap, good high, easily transported.. What wasn't to like eh?

Mushrooms galore. Fresh or dried...

Peyote! OMG, I remember the summer THOSE hit this town.. People where puking up all OVER the place and THEN waking around like zombies...

Black tar heroin, check. it was all the rage my senior year in high school..

Pills of EVERY type, uppers, downers and of course the above mentioned Quaalude.

Shoot, there was even Opium available.

The one thing there wasn't was Cocaine or crack. Those came onto the scene much later, into the '80's..

Even though the drinking age was 21 we where awash in alcohol. Beer was the drink of choice but by no means the only thing.. Oh no... If it had alcohol in it, it got drunk...

Back in those days, Coors beer took on an almost MYTHIC aura since it wasn't allowed to be transported east of the Mississippi. People would bring it back to Indiana from Colorado and they would INSTANTLY become G-ds...

You where TRULY cool to be seen sipping on a Coors with a joint hanging out of your mouth... Instant top-tier cool my friends and the chicks would FLOCK...

Speaking of the chicks..... well it all just seemed SO much easier back then.. Maybe it was because we where all so young, so naive... Whatever it was it WAS so free and easy. Sex flowed just as much as the drugs and the beer..

ALL of this was lived to a sound track UNEQUALED in my opinion... I know... I know. We ALL suffer from this same thing. We tend to always think that the music we grew up with was the BEST right?

But to this day I will still stand by the statement that the bands and music made from the 60's through the mid 70's stands as the BEST music EVER, period!

Nothing made since even comes CLOSE!!

So THERE
